The Canutillo Independent School District Board of Trustees recently approved a bond election order. The election will be on Nov. 2 with early voting from Oct. 18-29. The $187.5 million bond would be used for new construction projects and improvements to each of the district’s educational facilities. If passed, the bond would be issued at a zero total tax rate increase to Canutillo taxpayers.

The Canutillo ISD 2021 bond aims to plan for the accelerated current and future growth of the Canutillo/Northwest region with future construction projects to include a new campus for Northwest Early College High School to replace the current portable classroom setup. A new Career and Technology Education (CTE) facility at Canutillo High School to house and advance popular science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs including engineering, biomedical, cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing and machinery mechanics or robotics as well as health science programs to include patient care technician, dental assisting and pharmacy technician. A new Jose J. Alderete Middle School will be constructed in the Northwest area where I-10 and Loop 375 meet to accommodate projected growth and resolve other issues with the current location such as traffic congestion in the surrounding area.

The 2021 bond will also fund a new classroom wing for Congressman Silvestre & Carolina Reyes Elementary, the only Canutillo ISD campus located east of I-10 in the Cimarron community to alleviate overcrowding at the campus currently over capacity. Each Canutillo ISD elementary school will also receive a new multipurpose facility to allow students access to indoor facilities during inclimate weather or extreme temperatures and allow campus cafeterias to be used for their intended purpose.

Additionally, the 2021 bond will provide increased safety and security at each campus with the addition of safety vestibules that eliminate direct access to student areas by outsiders. Also included in the program are essential maintenance and upgrades to school buildings, including ceiling/flooring replacements, HVAC and plumbing upgrades, replacing exterior/interior doors, the expansion of school parking lots and playground/sports field upgrades to name a few.

The list of proposed projects and initiatives under the 2021 bond program were developed through the efforts of the “Just For Kids Committee” made up of community members and stakeholders who worked closely with Canutillo ISD administrators and trustees to provide guidance and insight on the needs of the Canutillo community and the various campuses.

“We thank our Just for Kids Committee members who represented our community and devoted their time and efforts to visiting campuses and facilities, hearing data from third-party experts and carefully considering what projects were most pressing to the safety and success of Canutillo students,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Pedro Galaviz.

Under the current administration, Canutillo ISD has earned several notable recognitions for efforts of going above and beyond to show financial responsibility and integrity, ensure financial records are freely accessible to the public and meet a high standard of financial transparency such as receiving a perfect score of 100 - Superior Achievement - for the 2020-21 School Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) and being named one of three El Paso school districts, to achieve specific transparency goals through the Comptroller’s Transparency Stars program.

"We see this 2021 bond as an opportunity to usher the District into a new era of transparency, collaboration and inclusivity in everything we do,” said Dr. Galaviz. “We are here to serve the Canutillo community and most importantly, our students. To do that successfully, we need to work together with our community and this bond is an opportunity to build trust and make sure the voice of the community is heard and that projects selected by our stakeholders are carried out successfully with full collaboration from start to finish.”

Canutillo ISD officials have already held over a dozen community meetings to reach out to the community with facts and projects associated with the 2021 bond. All members of the Canutillo community are encouraged to attend one of the upcoming 2021 bond community meetings. There are both in-person and virtual offerings.
