Brooks gets 100th

Friday’s win against the Chapin Huskies was a landmark victory for the Canutillo High School Eagles. No, the win didn’t clinch a District championship for the 3-1 Eagles. Nor did it guarantee the team a place in the playoffs.

By all accounts, the win was nothing more than a good way for Canutillo to continue its winning streak as the newest member of District 1-5A.

But the 17-0 blanking of Chapin meant something more important for the team. The win gave Scott Brooks his 100th victory as head coach of the Canutillo Eagles and placed him among an elite group of high-school coaches who have amassed such number of wins.

“This is a wonderful achievement for someone who is very near and dear to our District,” said CISD Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz. “It truly exemplifies the hard work and dedication of a man who has made a commitment to our students and our community.”

Coach Brooks began his career as head coach of Canutillo High School in 1999. Since then, he has made significant improvements in the football programs at CHS and the two middle schools that feed into it.

The CHS football program now is considered to be one of the best in the city and a playoff contender in the state. Coach Brooks’ program has produced several players who have gone on to play college football.

Last year, the Canutillo Eagles made history as one of just a handful of high-school football programs to reach the Area Round of the state playoffs.

Coach Brooks was selected to coach in the Texas vs. The Nation College All-Star game and the El Paso All-Star game, where he coached with his father, Don Brooks.

Coach Brooks characteristically played down the importance of his 100th.

“It’s no big deal,” he said. “What’s important is that we give our kids the opportunity to play good football and get a top-level education.”

Brooks will go for win No. 101 on Friday as the Eagles face the El Paso High Tigers.
