Canutillo ISD kicked off the 2017-18 school year fervently and held its biennial convocation Friday, August 18, 2017 in the Canutillo High School auditorium. The theme of this year’s event was “Building G.R.I.T. – Growth, Resilience, Innovation and Tenacity”.

The week began with a first-of-its-kind in Canutillo teacher-inspired professional development conference given by District teachers for teachers and ended with a spirited and inspiring rally featuring a passionate keynote speaker, Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch. Familiar with the challenges of poverty, discrimination and illiteracy, the renowned, influential speaker inspired with a mission to empower the next generation of leaders in Canutillo.

“There is no place like Canutillo at the start of the school year,” Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz said. “The energy among our teachers and entire staff and administration is second to none in striving to reach our goal of becoming a premier school district.”

Convocation also featured performances by the Canutillo High School Drumline and Cheer Squad, and 15-year-old music sensation and Guinness Book of World Records holder, Brandon Bailey Johnson. A very special guest from Fort Bliss, Texas, Command Sergeant Major, Thomas Williams, Dean of Professional Military Studies and Director of Staff & Faculty at the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, was accompanied by other soldiers who drilled our teachers into shape.

“We were extremely impressed by the professionalism and the overall magnitude of this event,” Command Sergeant Major Williams wrote. “Our entire team was humbled and thankful to be a part of helping (Canutillo) kick off another academic school year. Canutillo ISD has it right with your message, vision, initiatives and caliber of professional educators. You made us all excited for the future of our children and our communities.”
