CMS Honor Band

Excellence within Canutillo Fine Arts has become a tradition as it continues to spread its magic regionally and nationally. The performances by the Canutillo Middle School Honor Band and Reyes Elementary School Chamber Choir earned them Gold Awards at the WorldStrides Heritage Festival at Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

The CMS Honor Band, directed by Mr. Christian Rodriguez, received a Gold First-Place Award at the Festival. This accomplishment has given them the opportunity to participate in an elite series known as the Festival of Gold in New York City. This achievement has qualified them for a chance to audition to perform at the world-renowned Carnegie Hall.

“I know the students and myself are extremely excited to be given the opportunity to perform at the Festival of Gold at Carnegie Hall,” Christian Rodriguez said.  “It is humbling to know we may be the only middle school to be invited this year.”

This is the second time the CMS Honor Band earns a Gold Award at the Festival. Earlier this spring, the band also participated in the UIL competition where they earned a Division One rating in the performance section.

In addition to the band’s accomplishments, CMS student Cassandra Villalobos received the “You Make the Magic,” award. This award showcases an individual on their outstanding leadership skills, character, and dedication in their campus. Cassandra also received an animated portrait made by one of the Disney animators.
Just a week prior to CMS earning the gold, the Reyes Elementary School Chamber Choir took home a Gold Second-Place Award at the Festival.

The Reyes Chamber Choir is composed of students from the fourth and fifth grade levels. The Choir is under the direction of Mrs. Rocio Rodriguez. Mrs. Rodriguez has directed choirs at the festival three times and has earned Gold Awards in each of her appearances. The first two were with the Jose Damian Elementary Chamber Choir and the third being with the Reyes Chamber Choir.
