The district scored an overall grade of 91.

“This new high rating tells us nothing new about the exemplary performance of our students under our outstanding teachers and staff,” Canutillo ISD Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz said. “We have been seeing the evidence of significant improvement in student progress at our schools for quite some time now.”

The new, highly anticipated accountability system, House Bill (HB) 22, passed by the 85th Texas Legislature is used to indicate how well schools are helping students reach grade level and how well students are prepared for success after high school. The system gives schools an overall rating based on performance in three different areas or domains: Student Achievement, School Progress, and Closing the Gaps. TEA states that much like the grades given to students, the A–Through–F ratings identify ways to help schools improve over time.

Under the new system, elementary and middle school ratings will be based entirely on performance on the STAAR tests. For high schools, the ratings also consider college, career and military readiness and graduation rates for the Student Achievement and School Progress domains.

According to TEA, Student Achievement looks at how much all students know and can do. School Progress looks at how much better all students are doing than they were last year or how much better they are doing than their peers in similar schools. While Closing the Gaps looks at how well different groups of students are performing.

“We are pleased to see that the state recognizes the results of our efforts to improve student outcomes in Canutillo,” Galaviz added. “However, we will continue our focus on improving high-performing areas such as post-secondary readiness and closing performance gaps.”
