Northwest Early College High School is preparing tomorrow’s best today. The Texas Education Agency (TEA), through the Education Service Center Region 13, has awarded Northwest Early College High School with a $10,000 College and Career Readiness School Model (CCRSM) sub-grant.

The purpose of the CCRSM sub-grant is to provide financial and technical support to high-performing, currently-designated CCRSM campuses that are implementing best practices as defined by the CCRSM Blueprints. Schools in districts that serve the majority of economically disadvantaged students are considered.

TEA recognized schools that have demonstrated consistent high levels of student academic achievement, Northwest being the only one in El Paso. The Texas CCRSM are programs similar to Northwest Early College High School which is a blend of high school courses and college courses, including measures of early college readiness.

Northwest Principal Jesica Arellano says that the grant recognizes the strategic vision of the school.

“It gives us an opportunity to showcase the hard work and dedication that everyone gives day in and day out in making sure every student is successful,” Arellano said. “We have students who struggle, but we work exceptionally hard to help them overcome these obstacles so that they are successful academically, socially, and emotionally.”

Some of the activities the sub-grant requires is to share best practices through the CCRSM website, conference sessions, and open house opportunities, create resources, and host webinars or training of developed resources.

The Texas College and Career Readiness School Models (CCRSM) are open enrollment programs that blend high school and college coursework to help historically underserved and at-risk students develop technical skills, earn college credentials and degrees, and pursue in-demand career paths.

Students at Northwest take college credit courses as early as the fall semester of their freshmen year. The school offers rigorous instruction and accelerated courses. Northwest Early College High School and El Paso Community College merge the curriculum of high school courses and college courses that allows students to complete both the Texas high school diploma and the associate degree in a 4 year time period. El Paso Community College provides academic and social support services to help students succeed, while providing students with college readiness at no cost.

The future implementations in the year for Northwest will be to redesign the blueprint with new elements for the upcoming year.
