The school earned the Purple Star Campus Designation from the Texas Education Agency.

The Purple Star Award for military-friendly schools recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to the nation’s military. Schools that earn the award will receive a special Purple Star recognition to display onsite.

Reyes Elementary Principal Jessica Carrillo says that the school celebrates the qualities and enduring spirit of military kids and their families.

“We don’t take our freedom for granted at Reyes. We are thankful every day for the brave men and women who protect our freedom,” Carrillo said. “Our school is committed to our community and the high number of active-duty military families we serve. We want to show them that we value their sacrifices and that they are vital parts of our community.”

Purple StarAccording to the Military Child Education Coalition, demographically, military-connected children comprise nearly two million military-connected students. Almost every school district in America includes military-connected students and youth whose parents serve or served in the Active, Guard, and Reserve components of the Armed Forces. Over 80% of these students attend U.S. public schools.

This special honor was created by the 86th Texas Legislature through SB 1557, where a school will be honored with the Purple Star Award if it completes required activities. Reyes Elementary met established criteria including the designation of a campus-based military liaison, creation and maintenance of an easily accessible web page that includes information for military-connected students and their families, and a campus transition program. Additionally, the school created a resolution showing support for military-connected students and families, participated in Month of the Military Child, and partnered with a school liaison officer to encourage and provide opportunities for active-duty military members.

106 campuses across Texas met the established criteria and earned Purple Star Campus Designations for the 2020-2021 school year.
