Let's All Do Our Part

Message from the SuperintendentDear Canutillo Community,

As we announced last week, beginning Monday, November 16, our District will be participating in the COVID-19 Rapid Testing Program. Canutillo ISD has opted to utilize COVID Rapid testing kits as a way to screen our students and staff that are present on the campus for the instructional day and are participating in approved extracurricular activities. The rapid tests will produce results within 15 minutes. Each campus and department will communicate with its students and staff about the specific procedures.

As a community, I ask that we pay attention to what’s going on around us. Recently, El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego recently issued a stay-at-home order, which has been extended to December 1, 2020. The City of El Paso and many local businesses argue that the local economy will suffer as a result of the county judge’s order. The courts are currently deliberating the legality of the order in view of conflicting directives issued by Texas Governor Abbott. Nevertheless, the Canutillo Independent School District will fully comply with all provisions of our local government’s mandates until they expire or are directed otherwise by a court.

The District, however, concurs with the county judge’s determination that El Paso County is in a state of disaster, as evidenced by the high number of COVID-19 cases, resulting deaths, limited hospital capacity and other factors. As always, we will work in partnership with our local government in taking all measures necessary to promote the safety and welfare of our community. To see how COVID-19 is affecting our schools, check out our updated dashboard at http://www.canutillo-isd.org/2020-2021_school_year/covid19_dashboard.

So, no matter what the courts decide, or your personal opinion on the economy, it is up to us to do what it takes to keep each other safe. Watch your distance from others, wear a mask, and wash your hands. This Thanksgiving holiday, consider alternative, safer ways to celebrate without putting your family at risk. You, as a community member, have the power to make things better or worse by your actions, not the government.
