May Celebrations

Message from the SuperintendentDear Canutillo community,

May is full of activities and events with lots to celebrate!

As we wrap up teacher appreciation week, we thank our amazing teachers for being you and having a positive impact on our children all year long.  I’d also like to thank our Partners in Education for awarding our great teachers with tokens of appreciation.

Northwest Early College High School stands among the top-ranked public high schools around the country. The school, once again, is a 2021 Best High School, based on rankings by the U.S. News & World Report.

Northwest has dedicated itself to making the annual list and has successfully moved up the rankings throughout the years. It has taken the lead with the top rank of all the early college high schools in El Paso. U.S. News 2021 Best High Schools numerically ranked nearly 18,000 schools nationwide this year and Northwest placed #2 among El Paso metro area high schools, #77 in Texas, and #492 in national rankings. Congratulations, Griffins!

Today, we celebrate School Lunch Hero Day! “What is a school lunch hero?” A school lunch hero is a school nutrition employee that prepares healthy meals for students while adhering to nutrition standards, navigating food allergies, adapting to COVID-19 protocols, providing curbside meals, preparing weekend meal bundles, and so much more, and always offering service with a smile, school nutrition professionals have a lot on their plate. Let us not forget the thousands of kids they served through the COVID-19 emergency.  School lunch staff are truly heroes.

In other news, it is vital that we get our youngest scholars off on the right foot. So, we are very excited to be offering a new full-day universal pre-kindergarten program! We are now accepting applications for a section at Bill Childress Elementary School that will begin this upcoming 2021-2022 school year. Please visit our website for registration details.  Kinder Ready, College Ready, Ready for Life!

As Canutillo grows, we want YOU to be a part of paving the way. Community members who are interested are invited to be part of Just for Kids. Just for Kids is a citizen advisory committee that meets to review the facility needs of the district along with the financial and instructional impact of those new facilities. The committee’s meetings are scheduled to begin this month.

Just for Kids committee membership is open to those in Canutillo ISD who are parents, residents, district employees, business leaders, community leaders, and students. If you are interested, please visit our website at canutillo-isd.org/bond/just_for_kids  and complete the application.  We look forward to building today for tomorrow's best!

Finally, El Paso’s legendary Coronado HS football coach, Don Brooks, recently passed away. He was greatly respected by his players and fellow coaches. Although he has been laid to rest, his lessons live on. Don Brooks taught us that perseverance, hard work, and passion are the essential ingredients of success, not only in sports but also in life.  His son, Coach Scott Brooks, will continue to carry on his father's legacy of excellence here at CISD on our blue gridiron.

This weekend, treat your moms to a special gift of love. Happy Mother’s Day!
