The Canutillo 2021 Bond at a Glance

Message from the SuperintendentDear Canutillo community,

The CISD Board of Trustees voted August 10 to call for a $187.5M bond election with two separate propositions to appear on the Nov. 2, 2021 ballot for school renovations and technology.

If taxpayers vote to approve the two bond propositions on the Nov. 2 ballot, they would not see an increase to their total tax rate based on District projections.

The decision to move forward on the Nov. 2 election followed recommendations from a community-based Just for Kids Committee, as part of the District facilities master plan.

The Just For Kids Committee, made up of community members, parents and other stakeholders, toured CISD campuses and facilities, reviewed data compiled by third-party experts and provided guidance and insight on the most pressing needs of the District and the Canutillo community.

Under Proposition A of the bond, $177.5 million would address significant renovation needs for all campuses. This includes 10 schools, some of which have not been renovated in several years, and most with decades-old infrastructure.

If passed, the 2021 bond will fund security upgrades for all CISD schools. In addition, outdated building systems such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, etc. would be replaced, and all schools will receive other renovations. These upgrades will directly improve indoor air quality, health and student welfare.

Additionally, funds would go toward new construction, including a new Alderete Middle School and a new permanent building for Northwest Early College High School, replacing the current portables. The 2021 bond will also fund a new Career & Technical Education building on the CHS campus.

Under Proposition B, $10 million will go towards the refinancing of funds borrowed for resources needed to support remote instruction during the pandemic including computers, Canutillo Connect - digital community that provides outside universal internet access, and LED lighting.

In the upcoming weeks through November, CISD will be hosting a series of public meetings to inform parents and the community about the proposed bond and potential bond projects. I welcome and encourage the Canutillo community to attend one of these meetings to learn more about the proposed projects and the scope and impact of the bond on each and every CISD campus as well as have questions and concerns addressed directly and accurately.  Click here for dates and times.
