Message from Board President Patsy Mendoza - Feb. 3, 2023
Dear Canutillo Familia,
We had an outstanding week here in the Canutillo Independent School District. This is the type of week any school district wishes to have all the time. Truly, I am amazed and proud of the work our students and teachers do. They bring such great attention to a wonderful community.
On Monday we learned that Canutillo Elementary School was the recipient of a Braden Aboud Memorial Foundation grant that helped the coaches there buy much-needed equipment for physical education and recess. The Braden Aboud foundation has always been an amazing partner for our schools and the money they so graciously have given CES will go a long way in making sure that our students remain active and healthy. We hope we keep the legacy of Braden alive. Thank you!
On Tuesday, our kids celebrated the 100th day of instruction for the 2022-23 school year with tons and tons of fun. I was delighted to see photos and videos of students dressed as 100-year-old people or wearing funny T-shirts celebrating the occasion. At Deanna Davenport Elementary, students had a fashion show with their costumes and parades. And at Bill Childress Elementary the staff and visitors were treated to a gourmet coffee to get the fuel they need to finish the year strong. Our kids and teachers work so hard to keep us the best performing school district in El Paso, and we have to celebrate these milestones. Congrats on a great first 100 days!
On Wednesday, the eyes of the entire city were on Canutillo High School senior LJ Martin, who announced on that day in front of a packed auditorium that he will be enrolling and playing football for Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. LJ is a remarkable young man who has done so much to place the name of Canutillo ISD and Canutillo High in everyone’s lips. An amazing athlete and a bright scholar, he has a future that can’t be denied. On behalf of everyone here in Canutillo, I want to wish LJ all the luck in the world. He is going to do great!
On Thursday, Northwest Early College High School Pre-AP Chemistry students gave us a masterclass in problem solving with a lesson that is so inventive! The students in Ms. Zeh’s class walked into a classroom that had been set up as a mock airplane crash. Using their chemistry knowledge and forensic skills, the students had to figure out what caused the accident. What a fun way to learn and assess your mastery of a subject! No wonder NWECHS is a Blue Ribbon School!
And today, as we get ready to wind down, all the elementary school students in Canutillo are invited to boys and girls varsity basketball games at Canutillo High for CISD Elementary School Night! Kids wearing their CISD elementary t-shirt or gear will be let into the game for free! I hope tons of our future Eagles fill up the gym and come out to support our boys and girls on the court. The games start at 6 p.m. at CHS.
As you can see, we had quite the week. I can’t wait to see what next week brings!
