May 26 meeting

JFK MeetingAs Canutillo grows, the district is embarking on a transparent, collaborative, and inclusive planning process for the sake of giving their students and staff optimal learning spaces to grow, develop, and create for the betterment of tomorrow.

Last night, Canutillo ISD held its first Just for Kids Committee meeting. The Just for Kids Committee is an important committee that will work with the Canutillo ISD administration and school board in planning for facilities that support positive school experiences now and for generations to come. With over 40 attendees, the turnout and participation were both great indicators of the community's interest in promoting innovative, future-focused opportunities for every student.

Highlights of the meeting were an introduction from Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz, who shared the district's vision along with the committee's role in supporting that vision. An overview of key topics for consideration--long-term growth, district-wide initiatives, and facility renewal needs--was presented for discussion. These topics were followed by an outline of Canutillo ISD's profiles for its learners, employees, and the community at large. Committee member and parent Julie Scott shared, “I was very impressed with the district profiles. I believe it is a breath of fresh air and a new perspective.”

Committee members are excited to learn more about all of the information presented. One committee member asked, “How can community partners help reach district goals?” Another committee member observed that he “Did not know that Canutillo ISD had this kind of discussion" and was pleased that the district was giving the community "a voice." Other questions from the groups revolved around questioning if middle school was the right place for students "to pick a pathway or college major.”

At the conclusion of the meeting, volunteers agreed to serve as spokespersons on the committee's behalf. Committee spokespersons are Ivette Muller, Dr. Alexis Rossi, Jonathan Flores, Bernardo Barela, and David Esquivel, Jr. In addition, two students taking part also volunteered to speak on behalf of the committee: Rachel Cisneros and Jesus Ramos.
