How Far we've Come

Message from the SuperintendentDear Canutillo community,

Homecoming is the American tradition of welcoming alumni back to their alma mater to revel in school spirit and indulge in football, friends and fun. For us, it is a tradition that connects past, present and future generations together to celebrate our shared culture of what it means to be Canutillo and show our collective pride for not only our school but our community.

This past week we had a blast! We welcomed old and new friends to join us in camaraderie during our parade, bonfire, and pep rally. A big congratulations to Miranda Guerrero for being selected this year’s Canutillo High School Outstanding Ex. She is a registered nurse with University Medical Center’s (UMC) Intensive Care Unit.

When the COVID-19 virus wreaked havoc on our city and hospitals were overwhelmed, Miranda stepped up to the challenge and fought on the frontlines to treat and care for members of our city and community when they needed it the most. We thank her for all she does and hope she enjoyed coming home in glory to inspire current students to aim high and never give up in the face of adversity.

It was great to come together again this year. The fun continues as we prepare to root for the Eagles during the homecoming football game and CHS students break out their dancing shoes to dance the night away during their homecoming dance on Saturday.

Next week, Northwest Early College High School kicks off their homecoming celebration as students get ready to embark on a journey “Around the world” during their homecoming week Sept. 27 - Oct. 2, filled with fun activities and dress up days culminating with a dance on Saturday, Oct. 2.

  • Monday, Sept. 27 - Pajama day
  • Tuesday, Sept. 28 - Character day
  • Wednesday, Sept. 29 - Monochromatic day
  • Thursday, Sept. 30 - Throwback Thursday
  • Friday, Oct. 1 - Spirit day

As many come back home, we reflect and recognize that Canutillo boasts a long rich history with the first school building, the Lone Star School constructed in 1911. In 1962, Canutillo ISD passed its first bond to add a classroom wing for high school students next to the existing elementary school, which was located at the intersection of Fifth and Central Streets. In 1963, we graduated our first senior class.

We’ve come a long way since 1911, however much like 1962, we again find ourselves in a time of rapid growth in the Canutillo area. With the 2021 Canutillo ISD bond we hope to continue striving toward a lasting legacy of student access and success with new construction projects for future and current students and needed renovation, maintenance and repairs to schools and facilities.

This week we met with the El Paso Chamber of Commerce Small Business Advisory Council to share the facts and information of the bond. We also had a virtual community meeting with over 40 attendees and met with the Garcia Elementary community. We continue to expand our reach and inform more of our community about the bond.

Make plans to attend an upcoming meeting to learn about how your tax dollars will be used, if passed, and how we have made it possible to move forward with critical projects without any projected increase to your total tax rate. Visit our website for upcoming meetings https://bit.ly/3lWrGWz

I am happy to share that vaccination rates continue to increase in El Paso. A total of 516,542 or 75.2% of individuals age 12 and up have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. We continue to do our part and this week we held another mobile vaccination clinic at Alderete Middle School where our community could receive their first or second dose of the vaccine. We will be hosting another University Medical Center mobile clinic on Sept. 29 at Reyes Elementary where first and second doses will  be available to our students, staff, teachers and their families.

To further provide a safe environment for our campus community, as of Sept. 20, Canutillo ISD is offering COVID-19 rapid testing for all students and staff who are considered high risk exposures if they want to skip quarantine and remain on campus or who are present on campus during the instructional day and participate in approved extracurricular activities. For students, testing is offered at their campus and staff may test either at their campus or at Student Support Services.

Thank you to the community for all your support in making this year’s CHS Homecoming celebration a success. As we continue to gradually emerge from the shadow cast by the pandemic it is great to see Canutillo pride alive and well and look back at how far we have come, together!

Sincerely,

Pedro Galaviz
Superintendent of Schools
