Canutillo ISD is excited to expand its early childhood program by enrolling 3-year-olds in the first public Montessori program in the region. This free, dual-language program will offer young children in the community an opportunity to learn at their own pace through hands-on experiences while developing real-world skills.

The program at Gonzalo & Sofia Garcia Elementary School and Deanna Davenport Elementary School begins at the Children’s House level - the primary stage in Montessori education - and will continue to expand to a multi-age classroom to include 3, 4 and 5-year-olds.

The program will follow the Five Key principles developed by founder Maria Montessori.

  1. Respect for the child
  2. The absorbent mind
  3. Sensitive learning periods
  4. The prepared learning environment
  5. Auto-education

The Montessori Curriculum offers children five key areas of study:

  1. Practical Life
  2. Sensorial
  3. Mathematics
  4. Language
  5. Cultural Studies

The uniqueness of the Montessori approach encourages children to care for the environment, such as caring for plants and animals. Through the Practical Life area of study, children in the Canutillo Montessori program will be tasked with the responsibility of tending to a garden and caring for a classroom pet.

Requirements:

  • Must be 3 years of age as of September 1, 2024
  • Be potty-trained
  • Have basic communication skills
  • Be able to dress independently

A mandatory orientation will be presented to parents prior to the beginning of school.

In addition, the Montessori guides will schedule individual times to get to know each child and determine if they are ready for the program.

“The goal of early childhood education should be
to activate the child’s own natural desire to learn.”
- Maria Montessori

Guides in the Montessori Method are educators who are specially-trained in child development and determining what each child needs through careful observation. Guides are trained in the Montessori curriculum and philosophy to ensure an authentic experience in this transformative learning environment.

The Montessori Pre-K 3 guides at Gonzalo & Sofia Garcia Elementary School and Deanna Davenport Elementary School are excited to embark on this new journey with you and your child while making history and trailblazing the first public Montessori program in the region.
