At least that was the opinion of the judges in the first ever CISD Child Nutrition Services Menudo Cook Off.

The cook off pit all 10 kitchens in Canutillo ISD against one another to determine, once and for all, the makers of the best menudo in the District. The event was held at the Canutillo High School cafeteria.

“It’s all about bragging rights,” said Marco Macias, CISD’s Director of Child Nutrition. “All of our kitchens serve menudo once a month and they each put their own spin on it while still following all the federal nutritional guidelines.”

Canutillo High emerged as the winner on Friday, but the race was close. Second place was Reyes Elementary School and third place was Canutillo Middle School.

Judges Karla Mariscal from Telemundo El Paso and Laura Duran from El Paso ISD Food Services based their decision on five categories: taste, texture, color, aftertaste and appearance.

Mariscal and Duran tasted samples of each kitchen’s menudo without any condiments to assess their value.

After the judging, students, staff and other invited guests were able to sample each of the 10 menudos on display. A condiment bar included likes, diced onions, Chile flakes and oregano. Of course, francesitos also were served.

On top of bragging rights, the Canutillo High kitchen received a plaque honoring their award-winning menudo.

The other nine CISD will get a chance to dethrone the champion next year, when the district organizes the second menudo cook off.
