The Gift of Knowledge

Superintendent Galaviz Dear Canutillo Community,

The week of April 6-10 is Gifted & Talented Awareness Week, a week when we celebrate our students and educators who have demonstrated a unique approach to teaching and learning. This recognition was created to increase awareness and encourage support of gifted education in Texas. Through online community discussions and social media posts, parents, educators, and advocates come together to celebrate giftedness.

Here in Canutillo, our students plan on celebrating, too. I know that our Curriculum & Instruction staff has partnered with the Public Information Office to feature some of our GT students and the work they have done. I can’t wait to see what they can show us.

Of course, GT students come from all walks of life and all sorts of academic backgrounds. Gifted students are not just smart, they’re resourceful. And here in Canutillo, we want to make sure we serve these students and help them in their path to reach their academic, professional and personal goals.

To help us do this, however, we must first identify those students who qualify for Gifted & Talented services. If you think your child could benefit from enrolling in the GT program, we invite you to join one of the two informational sessions the Curriculum & Instruction team have put together for next week. A session in Spanish is scheduled for noon on April 4, and an English session will be held on the same day at 4:30 p.m. Both sessions will be via Zoom. In other news, I hope you can give the Canutillo Convos podcast a listen this week. It deals with senior pranks and the consequences for students who are caught participating in them. As I mentioned on the podcast, the pranks we are seeing lately are either dangerous or cruel in nature. We will not stand for this and any student caught participating in these pranks will be stripped from their privilege to participate in graduation events, including commencement exercises.

I urge parents to speak with their children about engaging in these pranks. I understand that the end of the school year is near and that blowing off steam is part of the rites of passage for high school seniors. However, we must do so in a fun and healthy way, not in a way that can get people hurt.

To listen to the podcast, search for Canutillo Convos in the Apple podcast store!

Have a great weekend Canutillo. We’ll see you next week!
