Law Enforcement Program Of Study

The Law Enforcement program of study teaches CTE learners about the development of, adherence to, and protection of various branches of law. Students will learn how to appropriately and legally respond to breaches in the law according to statutory rules and regulations as well as investigate how and why the breaches occurred.

Principles of Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security (Middle School Level Course) Students will examine the roles and responsibilities of police, courts, corrections, private security, and protective agencies of fire and emergency services. The course provides students with an overview of the skills necessary for careers in law enforcement, fire service, protective services, and corrections.

Law Enforcement I (2 Semesters) (9-10)
Overview of the history, organization, and functions of local, state, and federal law enforcement. Students will understand the role of constitutional law at local, state, and federal levels; the U.S. legal system; criminal law; and law enforcement terminology and the classification and elements of crime.

Law Enforcement II (2 Semesters) (10-11)
Provides the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare for a career in law enforcement. Students will understand ethical and legal responsibilities, patrol procedures, first responder roles, telecommunications, emergency equipment operations, and courtroom testimony.

Correctional Systems (2 Semesters) (10-12)
In Correctional Services, students prepare for certification required for employment as a municipal, county, state, or federal correctional officer. Students will learn the role and responsibilities of a county or municipal correctional officer; discuss relevant rules, regulations, and laws of municipal, county, state, or federal facilities; and discuss defensive tactics, restraint techniques, and first aid procedures as used in the municipal, county, state, or federal correctional setting. Students will analyze rehabilitation and alternatives to institutionalization for inmates.

Practicum in Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security (2 Semesters) (11-12)
The practicum course is designed to give students supervised practical application of previously studied knowledge and skills in law, public safety, corrections, and security. Practicum experiences can occur in a variety of locations appropriate to the nature and level of experience. Students are encouraged to participate in extended learning experiences such as career and technical student organizations and other leadership or extracurricular organizations. 
Student requirements for Practicum of Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security:

  1. Must be a US Citizen
  2. Must be 18 years old by July 1st of graduation year
  3. Must obtain Level 2 license by completion of first semester of Practicum of Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security
  4. Must pass a background check
  5. No DAEP, misdemeanors or felony offenses (ISS reviewed by committee)
  6. Must be willing to pay for uniform $100-$130 start of senior year (estimated cost)
  7. Must maintain an 80+ throughout the school year
