Senate Bill 10

Ten Commandments Display Requirement

In 2025, the 89th Texas Legislature passed a law (Senate Bill 10) requiring Texas public schools to display Ten Commandments posters in every classroom. Canutillo ISD did not use taxpayer funds for the Ten Commandments posters. Instead, the district accepted a donation of posters from citizen Jerry Guerra. The law requires Texas school districts to accept donations of posters for display in classrooms.

You can read the full text of the SB 10 here.

Legal Challenges to the Law

Several Texas school districts challenged the law through the courts, and despite initial legal stays to SB 10, the 5th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals upheld the legality of the bill and allowed the state to implement the law.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has informed school districts that his office will investigate and prosecute school districts that do not meet the requirements under SB 10.

Accordingly, Canutillo ISD is required to post the Ten Commandments in the classrooms upon a donation of posters.

Comments Regarding the Law

Canutillo ISD does not have any authority over SB 10 or its requirements. Any comment regarding the posting of the Ten Commandments should be directed to the offices of your state representative or state senator, or the governor's office.
