Celebrating the Arts

Message from the Superintendent Dear Canutillo Community,

Next week, the Canutillo ISD Administration Building will host a very special event. Students from Northwest Early College High School will gather at the Galería Canutillo to unveil the District’s first visual arts exhibit in nearly six years. The exhibit, allied RE-VIVE, features a variety of pieces from students in the advanced art classes taught by the wonderful Heather Cawley. I am excited to meet with these student artists and their families to celebrate the re-birth of our student gallery here in central office.

If you care to join us, the exhibit is slated to have its opening reception at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26, at Galería Canutillo, 7965 Artcraft.

I don’t know much about art. I am, after all, more of a sports guy. But I do know that in order for our District to reach its full potential, we have to place a special emphasis on the fine arts. That’s why I am excited to see this gallery being reinvigorated and that there is some excitement surrounding the visual arts in our community.

Of course, our fine-arts focus should not be limited to one field. Here in Canutillo we continue to see progress in music education, with our Canutillo High School marching band reaching unprecedented levels of success this year. Additionally, at the middle-school level, for the first time in many, many years we saw band and choir concerts. We can’t forget about our dance students, like CHS senior Alan Herrera who recently was named an All-State Dancer. And our theater programs continue to showcase the talent we have at both the middle school and high school levels with constant plays being staged and performed.

As you can see, the state of fine arts is healthy in Canutillo. However, more can be done. As we continue to study the growth of programming and services in the District, we have to keep fine arts in mind. I know I speak on behalf of my administration and the Board of Trustees when I say that we are in full support of any kid who wants to showcase their talent and creativity through music, dance, art or performance. This is the Canutillo Way.

Have a great weekend, Canutillo! See you next week at the gallery opening!
