Celebrating the Dream

Message from the SuperintendentDear Canutillo community,

On Monday, Jan. 17 our district offices and campuses will be closed in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I hope we all take some time to reflect on the immeasurable contributions Dr. King made to establish and uphold civil rights in America that not only changed the face of the country we know today but also demonstrated to the world that significant change can be achieved through nonviolent resistance against injustice. Let’s enjoy and celebrate the dream Dr. King worked tirelessly to fulfill.

I want to give a shout out to the 18 students at Northwest Early College High School who earned College Board National Recognition Awards for their excellence in the classroom and outstanding performance on the PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, and/or AP Exams.

Additionally, congratulations to Jose Damian Elementary for being selected as the winner of the 2022 Best of El Paso Awards in the category of Elementary School. Go Firebirds!

COVID-19 Updates
We continue to prioritize the health and wellbeing of all students, faculty, and their families through the the rise of omicron and the anticipated spike in COVID-19 cases following the holidays, the district is closely adhering to safety guidelines and protocols that include an emphasis on testing, vaccinations, and masking to combat the virus’ spread and keep students in class for in-person instruction.

New COVID-19 rapid and PCR testing is now being offered through Student Support Services at the Lone Star Building Rec Center, Monday and Thursday mornings from 8 a.m. - noon. Testing will be offered to all district staff, students, and their family members on these two testing days only. This will be a free service provided by ChemGiant, not a service provided by Canutillo ISD staff. To test on these days, a copy of your insurance card or your social security number will be necessary.

Regular free COVID-19 rapid testing by district staff will continue to be offered to employees at the Lone Star Building, Monday - Friday, from 3 - 5 p.m. Testing for students will continue to be offered at their respective campuses. Please contact the school to request information on the days and hours of testing. These are walk-in services and no appointment is required.

Mobile vaccination clinics are still available and we encourage everyone who is eligible to be vaccinated to utilize this service to help curb the spread of the virus in your homes and in our schools and facilities. Critical District Needs
Thank you to those who engaged with us to share their thoughts and ideas on possible solutions to address our ongoing critical district needs via ThoughtExchange. At this time, we are continuing to weigh all viable options while closely looking at enrollment numbers across our campuses and other pertinent data to help guide our decisions to meet the needs we have at hand.

Have a happy and safe Martin Luther King Jr. holiday!

Sincerely,

Pedro Galaviz
