Fall Intersession Extended

Message from the SuperintendentDear Canutillo Community,

I hope that many of you are enjoying your fall intersession break. I want to take this opportunity to bring you up to date on an important decision we made today.

Due to the sharp rise in active COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and continued community spread in the El Paso region, we are extending the fall intersession by one week. The recommendation is in cooperation with the El Paso Department of Public Health and other area school districts.

During the extended intersession, October 19-23, meals will continue to be served curbside at all CISD schools and bus delivery to children ages 18 and under. View the details.

Students, teachers and other designated campus staff currently on the intersessional fall break this week are now scheduled to return to their learning method on Monday, October 26, 2020. The flexible school calendar allows the extended week of intersession, October 19-23, to be exchanged for the spring extended year services, March 8-12, 2021. However, Northwest Early College High School will continue with asynchronous remote learning next week as it is on a different calendar.

Earlier this week, it was announced that only essential personnel will be allowed into athletic events through October 17. Spectators or parents will not be allowed in. Additionally, all middle-school athletics are suspended through October 25.

Canutillo ISD continues to carefully monitor the health of our community while following guidance and directives from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) regarding the opening of schools. The district submitted a request for a data-driven transition waiver to hold the current number of students receiving in-person instruction using COVID-19 parameters as a guide. Formal approval has not been received to date.

When we built our school calendar, we kept flexible options to handle the rapidly changing environment. Right now, everyone in the community must listen to the advice of our local health leaders. Stay home, socially distance, wear masks in public if you must go out, wash your hands, and disinfect surfaces as often as possible. We must all do our part to reduce the spread of infection in our community.

Details are subject to change according to the guidance of local health officials, state educational authorities, and the state of our local community health.

Dr. Pedro Galaviz, Superintendent of Schools
