Memorial Day weekend

Message from the SuperintendentDear Canutillo community,

As we pause on this Memorial Day to honor and mourn all the brave members of the military who died in service to our country, let us also remember other groups of courageous individuals, especially those who have emerged during the health crisis.

We are all breathing a big sigh of relief as vaccinations appear to substantially slow the spread of the COVID virus. We should never forget, however, those who served on the frontlines in the fight against this deadly disease. Our health care workers are very much appreciated for showing up each day with great resolve and fortitude to treat their patients, in spite of the risks.

We also give our teachers and school staff a big thank you for reporting to duty to serve our children during the course of the pandemic.

Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “Neither a wise man nor a brave man lies down on the tracks of history to wait for the train of the future to run over him.”

Last night, I had the privilege of participating in our first commencement of the year. 80 of our seniors from Northwest Early College High School walked across the stage to receive their diplomas.  The class of 2021 has received over $6.3 million in scholarships! Congratulations to Valedictorian, Hailey Whetten who will attend Brigham Young University in the fall and Salutatorian, Lianna Estrada, who will attend The University of Texas at El Paso.  We are very proud of all our students and their commitment to academic excellence! Earlier this week, Canutillo ISD held its first Just for Kids Committee meeting. With more than 40 attendees, the turnout and participation were both great indicators of the community's interest in promoting innovative, future-focused opportunities for every student.  At the conclusion of the meeting, volunteers agreed to serve as spokespersons on the committee's behalf. Committee spokespersons are Ivette Muller, Dr. Alexis Rossi, Jonathan Flores, Bernardo Barela, Teresa Clapsaddle and David Esquivel, Jr.  In addition, two students taking part also volunteered to speak on behalf of the committee: Rachel Cisneros and Jesus Ramos.  To learn more about Canutillo ISD's Just for Kids Committee and how to get involved, contact Liza Rodriguez at [email protected].

Summer is around the corner and I wanted to share some information about summer meals.  All of our campuses will be serving their face-to-face students through the summer session. Two campuses will be providing curbside meals for anyone 18 years and under.

  • Deanna Davenport Elementary will be serving curbside meals from June 14th to June 24th from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, Monday - Thursday.
  • Canutillo High School will be serving curbside meals from June 14th to July 2nd from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, Monday - Friday.

Have a great three-day weekend with your family.
