The Canutillo Independent School District Board of Trustees on Thursday night completed the summative evaluation of Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz for the 2022-22 academic year.

In a unanimous vote, the Board voted to give Galaviz a positive evaluation and amended his contract to reflect the same 3 percent salary increase all other employees in the District received this fiscal year.

Trustees also approved payments into Galaviz’s retirement fund and reimbursements of his state pension.

“This was a capstone year for the Canutillo Independent School District and much of the success should be attributed to the leadership of Dr. Galaviz,” said Board President Sergio Coronado. “Canutillo is now an education powerhouse in the region and Dr. Galaviz is the architect of the commitment to excellence that helped us us get here.”

In 2021-22, Canutillo achieved two major milestones: the designation as the Best Small District in Texas from the HEB Excellence in Education program, and the third A Rating in a row from the Texas Education Agency.

Additionally, Galaviz oversaw the preparation for the launch of the region’s first public Montessori program, helped craft a budget that allowed for a 3 percent salary increase for all employees, and continued the fiscal responsibility that has earned the District unprecedented financial ratings.

Galaviz is El Paso’s longest-serving current superintendent, having arrived in Canutillo in 2013. Both his children are Canutillo graduates and he and his family live in District.

“I’m grateful to the Board for their continued vote of confidence in the work my administration and I do on behalf of the children of Canutillo,” he said. “I look forward to reaching even greater heights in our effort to give our families the best academic options out there.”
