The Canutillo Independent School District Board of Trustees on Monday night approved the calling of an election for voters to select three at-large trustees during the Nov. 8 general election.

A total of 10 candidates submitted an application to place their name on the ballot. Those candidates are:

  • Breanne Barnes
  • Lucy Borrego
  • Andres Gomez
  • Salvador Gonzalez
  • Salvador Payan (Incumbent)
  • Jesus Ramos
  • Tony Reza
  • Laure Searls (Incumbent)
  • Roberto Simental
  • Cindy Zuñiga

Elected members of the Board are tasked by the state to oversee the governance of the school district and are given five main responsibilities: to adopt the tax rate, hire and evaluate the superintendent, adopt and review policies, set goals and priorities and communicate with the public.

One incumbent trustee, Tristan Hernandez, will not seek a full election to the Board. Mr. Hernandez was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2020 to fill an unexpired term.

“On behalf of the students and staff of the Canutillo Independent School District, I want to thank Mr. Hernandez for stepping up to lead during one of the most difficult times in the history of our district,” Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz said. “His commitment and dedication to our schools and students will have a lifelong impact in our community.”
