The Canutillo Independent School District students outpaced region averages by scoring above or at the Texas average on the majority of the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) and End of Course (EOC) exams.
CISD continues to lead the way in mathematics and boasts the highest scores and accessibility to advanced math programs in the El Paso region. State released scores (2021) ranked CISD students above their regional peers in grades 5 math, 8 math, and Algebra I with 5th grade Spanish testers and Algebra I testers above state average.
CISD students have the unique opportunity to take advanced math courses such as algebra I in grade 8 which studies indicate encourages greater success in high school math courses and bolsters college-readiness.
“We can be proud of what our students accomplished with the support of our educators, parents, and guardians. These scores reflect hard work, dedication to our students, and a commitment to make the most of a difficult situation,” said Dr. Pedro Galaviz, Superintendent of Schools. “This also indicates the work we have ahead of us in meeting the individual needs of our students as we prepare to start a new school year of in-person learning and overcome the challenges of the past school year of remote or hybrid instruction.”
To further advance math centered curriculum, CISD plans to continue partnerships with the Council on Regional Economic Expansion and Educational Development (CREEED) and the Gates Foundation to strive for math classrooms where teachers honor the lived experiences of each student and where students can apply critical thinking skills to real-world situations to envision themselves and be recognized as mathematicians.
CISD is excited to welcome students back to the classroom and mark the beginning of a new era as a Math Innovation Zone. The district believes in every student’s right, responsibility, and access to exploring math through high-level tasks. Every student in the district will develop a deep mathematical comprehension by actively engaging in rigorous math activities where the teacher encourages student voice and facilitates productive struggle, collaborative work, and rich math discussions.
According to data from the Texas Education Agency and Data Interaction for Texas Student Assessments, additional STAAR results showed CISD 5th graders scored two points higher in reading while high school biology students in the district surpassed state averages.
CISD is analyzing student performance and developing instructional supports to address learning gaps to enable all students to experience academic success in a post pandemic era. As a jump start to the 2021-2022, CISD offered virtual and in-person summer learning opportunities to students district-wide.
