On the ballot, voters can expect to see as part of the bond referendum, Proposition A - School Facilities and Proposition B - Refunding of Maintenance Tax Notes.

“When voters hit the polls they will see that both Proposition A and B are very detailed and specifically worded. This is another measure we are taking as a District to be completely transparent, collaborative and inclusive with our constituents,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Pedro Galaviz. “We want to assure the Canutillo taxpayers that we will be prudent and good stewards of their money and that the bond finances will only go towards the projects recommended by our Just for Kids Committee.”

Projects under Propositions A and B include:

Proposition A: School facilities for $177.5 million

  • New career and technical education building at Canutillo High School
  • New Classroom wing added to Reyes Elementary School to alleviate overcrowding
  • Land purchase and construction for new Alderete Middle School
  • Permanent building for Northwest Early College High School to replace portable classrooms
  • New Multipurpose rooms for four elementary schools
  • Repurpose Jose J. Alderete Middle School to house new Lone Star building offices and central office
  • Storage facility
  • Land purchase for a future elementary school
  • Districtwide improvements
  • Baseball and softball playfields at middle schools
  • Canutillo High School baseball and softball lights
  • Artificial turf on middle school football fields
  • Protective canopies in Canutillo High School bus-pickup areas
  • Elementary school bus driveways
  • Districtwide hazmat abatement

Proposition B: Refunding of maintenance tax notes for $10 million

This bond proposition would allow the District to refinance funds borrowed to support remote instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic, to include LED lighting, computers and Canutillo Connect, a digital community that provides outside universal internet access.

The proposed bond was developed through the efforts of the Just For Kids Committee made up of community members, parents, teachers and other District stakeholders. Current District projections indicate that the passing of the 2021 bond will not result in an increase of the total tax rate for Canutillo taxpayers.
