The Northwest Early College High School (NWECHS) Class of 2024 officers had an idea to help make the prom memorable and affordable for their peers who may not be able to splurge on expensive attire this year. They quickly went into action to organize a formal wear drive.

The group put a call out to their campus and community at large asking for gently used formal wear donations, both his and hers. On March 10, they hosted a shopping event at their campus for students to go pick a free formal of their choice.

“We realize that many families in our community are experiencing hardships right now with the rising cost of living and basic essentials,” said junior class vice president Victoria Rodriguez. “Prom should be a special occasion for everyone and we didn’t want anyone from our campus to miss out due to the high cost of formal attire.”

The NWECHS community will have the first pick of the donated attire and any remaining items will be donated to a local community organization. Donations included 32 dresses, three sports coats, four dress slacks, 12 dress shirts and multiple ties in an array of styles and sizes.

“We appreciate the support of our community members who helped make this event happen,” Rodriguez said. “It was very successful and our classmates were very appreciative to have the chance to find something that fit their style without having to burden themselves or their family with the high cost. It is always great to give back but it is especially gratifying when you can support your own classmates and friends.”
