This is the image for the news article titled Canutillo High School Outstanding Ex of the Year 2021For Miranda Guerrero, graduating from Canutillo High School (CHS) was a family affair. Her mother, father, uncles, aunts, cousins and brother are all proud alums with her little brother, a current CHS junior, soon joining the ranks.

During this 2021 homecoming, it is fitting for CHS to honor a frontline hero like Guerrero who worked tirelessly through the pandemic as a registered nurse with University Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit. At the height of the pandemic when the El Paso region was hit hard by the COVID-19 virus, Guerrero stepped up to serve, working long hours and more work days while enduring the emotional and physical strain felt by many medical professionals during the course of the pandemic.

“I always knew I wanted to do something to help people,” Guerrero said. “As a nurse, I take care of people in our community everyday. When I first started I never thought that I would end up caring for people that I know and being a nurse in the El Paso area, I see people that I recognize and care for people that I know from my community and it makes it that much more rewarding.”

Coming back home and walking into the rotunda at CHS brought a feeling of nostalgia and joy for Guerrero as she reflected on her high school years and returning to the place where she made lasting memories and lifelong friends.

Guerrero graduated from CHS in 2015 and from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso in 2019. She remembers her time as a proud Eagle fondly. She played softball all four years of high school, was an athletic trainer and a member of the law enforcement club. During high school she was able to acquire college credits which gave her a head start towards earning her degree. She credits her education at CHS with getting her college and career ready and helping her discover her love of science.

Guerrero plans on furthering her education and training to be a family nurse practitioner to serve the community on a broader scale. Her goal is to practice at UMC West which would allow her to be in the middle of the Canutillo area to specifically serve the community she loves. She also dreams of continuing the family tradition and having her future children attend schools in the Canutillo Independent School District.

This year’s CHS Outstanding Ex advises current students to dream big and make the most of their high school years.

“Have fun, the years go by so fast,” Guerrero said. “You’ll never have fun like you will in high school but at the same time take advantage of all the opportunities available to you to accomplish your future goals, especially if you have big dreams and aspirations.”
