Canutillo High School Teacher Receives UTEP Mentoring Award

U.S. history and world geography social studies teacher and freshman girls basketball coach, Richard Moore was a recipient of the John and Gloria Lavis Excellence Award for mentor teachers by the University of Texas at El Paso’s College of Education, earning a $2,500 award.

“We are very proud of Mr. Moore,” said CHS Interim-principal Candice Marrufo. “The commitment he has shown to share his wealth of knowledge and experience with future teachers reflects his character. He believes that student success starts with teachers and he is doing his part to help make sure teachers new to the classroom succeed.”

The Schwartz and Lavis award aims to encourage new teachers and mentor teachers to work together to hone their teaching skills, best practices and advocate for their profession.

Awardees are recognized for having served as a mentor teacher to a UTEP teaching candidate in the past two years while demonstrating a positive mentoring relationship. The impact the recipient’s mentorship has made on the new teacher’s career development and advancement is taken into consideration by the College’s selection committee.

Recipients of the award are noted for their overall excellence in teaching, innovative lesson plans and ability to lead and inspire up-and-coming teachers.

“I am very humbled and honored to receive this recognition,” Moore said. “As teachers it is our responsibility to give back and share our experience and what we have learned as teachers to ensure that those who come after use are well equipped to do the best they can to give students the best education possible.”

Moore and other recipients throughout the region will be honored at the upcoming 2023 College of Education recognition event.
