Canutillo High School stage players win UIL bi-district one-act play contest

The group of thespians have spent the school year perfecting their acting chops with their production of the one-act play “A Monster Call” based on a novel by Patrick Ness that tackles issues of grief, loss, love and the courage to persevere. The Stage Player’s performances have received acclaim at both Zone and District competitions prior to claiming the Bi-District spot.

In addition to winning Bi-District, a few stars were born along the way to Area competitions. CHS also claimed several other honors for student performances during the competition. Student performers Alex Reyes and Zaira Díaz received Honorable Mention Awards, Michael Smith earned All Star Cast, and Britney Hernandez was named the Best Performer of the Day.

“I am extremely proud of this group of talented students,” said CHS theater teacher and director Jesus Ramirez. “Their dedication to their roles and commitment to put in the work has paid off and we are excited to keep this journey going and showcase our group’s talent.”

The UIL One-Act Play Contest was founded in 1927 and is the largest high school play production contest or play festival in the world. More than 14,000 Texas high school students in more than 1,200 plays participate in 300 plus contests, which take place from the beginning of March through the three-day, 40-production State Meet One-Act Play Contest.
