Canutillo Elementary student receives experience of a lifetime through Make-A-Wish Foundation

A Canutillo Elementary School student recently experienced a dream come true after being granted a special trip through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, creating lasting memories for him and his family.
Miqueas Fernandez, a fourth-grade student at Canutillo Elementary, was selected to receive a wish through the organization, which provides life-changing experiences to children facing critical medical conditions. With permission from his family, the district is sharing his story to celebrate the joy and inspiration behind the moment.
Miqueas is described by those who know him as a remarkable young boy with a bright spirit. He has a complex medical history and has been diagnosed with Down syndrome, a seizure disorder and cerebral palsy. He also relies on a ventilator to breathe. Despite these challenges, his resilience and personality left a strong impression on those around him and led to his acceptance into the Make-A-Wish program.
When it came time to choose his wish, Miqueas had a clear answer: He wanted to travel to Walt Disney World in Orlando and meet Moana, his favorite Disney character.
Last month, that wish became a reality.
Miqueas and his family traveled to Florida, where he was able to experience the parks and meet Moana in person. The trip provided not only excitement and joy but also a chance for the family to create unforgettable memories together.
Educators at Canutillo Elementary say opportunities like this can have a meaningful impact that extends beyond the moment.
“It is wonderful to be able to provide opportunities like this for our students,” teacher Sarah Spencer said. “Experiences like these not only bring joy to our students and their families but also help improve academic outcomes by giving them something positive and motivating to connect to their learning.”
District leaders say Miqueas’ story is a reminder of the power of community partnerships and the importance of supporting students in every aspect of their lives.
For Miqueas, the trip was more than a vacation — it was a magical experience filled with courage, joy and the chance to meet a hero. And for those who know him, it was a well-deserved wish come true.
