Canutillo High School Senior Awarded TALAS Scholarship

Canutillo High School senior Valentina Carrillo received a surprise announcement today recognizing her academic success, leadership and service to the community as the recipient of the Texas Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents El Paso Chapter “Keep Moving” Scholarship.

Carrillo was awarded the $2,000 scholarship, which honors graduating seniors in El Paso who have demonstrated excellence in academics, leadership and community involvement. The scholarship aims to empower students as they continue their educational journeys after high school.

The announcement was made in front of Carrillo’s classmates and teachers, creating an emotional moment as she learned she had been selected among a competitive pool of applicants from across the region.

“I am honored to be recognized by TALAS as a scholarship recipient,” Carrillo said. “This scholarship will come in handy as I get ready to graduate and attend college. College is expensive, and organizations like TALAS are helping students meet their goals.”

Carrillo has built a strong reputation at Canutillo High School through her dedication to academics and her commitment to serving others. School leaders said she represents the qualities the scholarship seeks to highlight, including perseverance, leadership and a drive to positively impact her community.

The TALAS El Paso Chapter created the Keep Moving Scholarship to celebrate students who reflect the values of determination and resilience. The scholarship name is inspired by a historic message delivered by civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Monica Bustillos, TALAS president-elect, said Carrillo embodies the spirit of the scholarship and the legacy behind its name.

“Valentina demonstrated the talent, skills and passion that it takes to receive this scholarship,” Bustillos said. “The scholarship is named after an important speech from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, who implored his followers and supporters to never stop pushing forward in order to reach their goals.”

TALAS works to support Latino educational leaders while promoting academic success and leadership development among students throughout Texas. The El Paso Chapter annually recognizes outstanding seniors who demonstrate a commitment to academic achievement and community service while preparing to pursue higher education.

Canutillo ISD leaders said Carrillo’s recognition highlights the District’s focus on preparing students for college, careers and leadership opportunities beyond graduation. They also noted the importance of partnerships with organizations like TALAS that provide meaningful support to students pursuing higher education.

Carrillo plans to attend college after graduation and said the scholarship will help ease the financial challenges associated with continuing her education. She hopes to use her education to make a positive impact in her community and serve as an example for other students who aspire to achieve their goals.

School officials said Carrillo’s achievement reflects the strength of Canutillo High School students and the support systems that help them succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
