Canutillo ISD appoints new director of professional learning & multilingual education

The Canutillo Independent School District announced the appointment of Esmeralda Aguilera as Director of Professional Learning & Multilingual Education, a leadership role focused on strengthening educator development and supporting the academic success of multilingual learners across the District.

Aguilera will oversee multilingual education programs and professional learning initiatives, including program implementation, instructional alignment, compliance monitoring and targeted professional development for teachers and campus leaders. 

In the role, she will help ensure educators have access to high-quality, research-based training and instructional practices that meet the needs of all students, including Canutillo ISD’s multilingual learners.

Superintendent Dr. Josue Borrego said Aguilera’s extensive experience in Canutillo ISD and her understanding of the District’s students, educators and programs make her well suited for the position.

“Ms. Aguilera brings a wealth of experience and a strong understanding of what our teachers and multilingual learners need to be successful,” Dr. Borrego said. “Professional learning is one of the most important investments we can make in student achievement. Her leadership will help us build the capacity of our educators, strengthen instructional practices across our campuses and ensure our multilingual students have every opportunity to thrive.”

Aguilera brings more than 17 years of experience in education and has served as both a bilingual educator and district leader committed to advancing multilingual education, professional learning and educator development.

Her career in Canutillo ISD has included serving as a Title III lead teacher, migrant coordinator, bilingual coordinator and Prep Allotment project manager, giving her extensive experience supporting students and educators at both the campus and district levels. She holds a master’s degree in education from The University of Texas at El Paso.

“I am honored and excited for the opportunity to continue serving Canutillo ISD in this new role,” Aguilera said. “I look forward to working alongside our teachers, campus leaders and staff to create meaningful professional learning opportunities that strengthen instruction and empower our educators. Most importantly, I am committed to ensuring our multilingual learners receive the high-quality instruction, support and opportunities they need to succeed.”

The appointment reflects Canutillo ISD’s continued focus on strengthening teaching and learning, investing in educator development and improving academic outcomes for all students.
