Canutillo ISD offers Advanced Placement Spanish at middle school

Canutillo ISD offers Advanced Placement Spanish at middle school

Canutillo ISD middle school students will soon have a new opportunity to get a head start on their academic futures.

Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, the district will offer Advanced Placement Spanish to eighth grade students, allowing them to earn college credit before entering high school. The initiative expands access to rigorous coursework and positions students for early success in both high school and college.

Under the program, students who take Spanish in sixth and seventh grade will be eligible to enroll in AP Spanish as eighth graders. Those who successfully complete the course and pass the Advanced Placement exam can earn both high school credit and college credit.

District leaders say the move reflects Canutillo ISD’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence and innovation in classroom instruction.

“This program will help students get a leg up not just on their high school credits but also on their college career,” said Canutillo Middle School Principal Andrea Esparza. “By earning AP credits early, our students will enter high school ahead of the game compared to their peers across El Paso.”

The addition of AP coursework at the middle school level is part of a broader effort to expand advanced academic opportunities across the district.

Alderete Middle School Principal Nidia Avila said the initiative highlights Canutillo ISD’s leadership in preparing students for long-term success.

“The inclusion of AP Spanish at the middle school level is one more way Canutillo ISD is demonstrating leadership in middle school instruction across the region,” Avila said. “It is part of what makes us the Best Small School District in Texas.”

The program is designed to build a strong academic foundation while encouraging students to challenge themselves earlier in their educational journey. By aligning middle school coursework with college-level expectations, district officials say students will be better prepared for advanced classes in high school and beyond.

Registration for the 2026–27 school year opened April 1. Families interested in enrolling their children can visit the district’s website at www.canutillo-isd.org/registration for more information.

District officials encourage families to take advantage of the new opportunity as Canutillo ISD continues to expand programs aimed at transforming teaching and learning across all grade levels.
