Canutillo ISD students showcase communication skills through interactive zoo experience

“Lions & tigers & bears, oh my!”

Students from Canutillo ISD's special education program recently transformed into zookeepers for a day, using their Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices to educate visitors about a variety of animals while demonstrating the powerful communication skills they use every day.

The engaging event provided students who are speech or hearing impaired an opportunity to take center stage as they shared facts about their assigned animals, answered questions and interacted with guests using their AAC devices. The activity was designed to promote communication, confidence and self-advocacy while giving students a meaningful way to apply their skills in a real-world setting.

As part of the AAC Summer Program, staff and fellow students visited the interactive "zoo," where they learned about animals ranging from exotic wildlife to familiar favorites. At each exhibit, students used their AAC devices to communicate information, showcasing the many ways technology can empower individuals to express themselves and connect with others. 

"The goal of this event was to provide our students with an authentic opportunity to communicate, teach and engage with others using the tools that help them find their voice," said special education director Melissa Mena. "Watching them confidently share information and interact with visitors was incredible. It demonstrates that every student has something important to say, and AAC gives them the ability to share it with the world."

The event highlighted Canutillo ISD's commitment to creating inclusive learning experiences that celebrate every student's abilities. More importantly, it showcased the determination, creativity and communication skills of students who continue to break down barriers and inspire those around them.

As visitors moved from exhibit to exhibit, they left with a greater understanding of both the animal kingdom and the remarkable ways students use AAC technology to communicate, learn and thrive.
