Damian Elementary Teacher Represents Canutillo ISD in Washington Cardiovascular Awareness Event

Damian Elementary Teacher Represents Canutillo ISD in Washington Cardiovascular Awareness Event

Damian Elementary School physical education teacher Dr. Nancy Torres traveled to the nation’s capital this week to take part in the American Heart Association’s Hearts on the Hill Fly-In, an event aimed at raising awareness about cardiovascular health and life-saving education in schools.

Dr. Torres attended the October 27-28 event at the Hilton Washington DC National Mall The Wharf after being awarded a full scholarship from the American Heart Association. The scholarship allowed her to join educators, advocates and health professionals from across the country in meetings with federal lawmakers to support legislation that promotes funding for CPR training and automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in schools.

During the two-day event, participants received training on how to effectively advocate for heart health, networked with peers and policymakers and shared stories from their communities. The American Heart Association’s goal is to increase access to life-saving skills and equipment that can make the difference during cardiac emergencies, especially in school settings.

For Dr. Torres, who teaches physical education at Damian Elementary in the Canutillo Independent School District, the opportunity to advocate for student health and safety on a national platform was both personal and professional.

“As educators, we have the chance to influence lifelong habits that lead to healthier lives,” Dr. Torres said. “This experience reminded me how important it is for schools to be equipped and prepared to respond when seconds count.”

Representing Canutillo ISD, Dr. Torres joined other participants in visiting members of Congress to encourage support for measures that expand CPR education and ensure schools have access to AEDs. The initiative reflects a growing national effort to empower students and teachers with the skills to act quickly during medical emergencies.

District officials praised Dr. Torres for her leadership and dedication to student wellness.

“Dr. Torres continues to exemplify what it means to go above and beyond for our students,” said Damian Principal Maggie Castillo. “Her participation in this national event highlights how Damian and Canutillo educators are making a difference not just in the classroom, but across the country.”

The Hearts on the Hill Fly-In is part of the American Heart Association’s advocacy program, which works to improve public health policies and provide equitable access to heart disease prevention and treatment nationwide.
