New Canutillo Elementary and Reyes Elementary Principals Appointed

New Canutillo Elementary and Reyes Elementary Principals Appointed

The Canutillo Independent School District Board of Trustees on Tuesday approved Superintendent Dr. Josue Borrego’s appointments of new principals at Canutillo Elementary School and Congressman Silvestre & Carolina Reyes Elementary School.

Alma Ramos was named principal of Canutillo Elementary, and Virginia Bernal was appointed principal of Reyes Elementary. Both appointments take effect March 2.

“Ms. Ramos and Ms. Bernal are experienced educators with a track record of excellence in Canutillo ISD,” Borrego said. “I am confident that, with their skill sets and our continued support, student outcomes at both campuses will continue to flourish. I am committed to ensuring they — and every principal in our district — have the tools and resources necessary to help our students and teachers succeed.”

Ramos has spent her entire public education career in Canutillo ISD. She most recently served as assistant principal at Canutillo Middle School. She previously was an instructional coach at Davenport Elementary School and a dual-language and general education teacher at Reyes Elementary. She is a former Canutillo ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year and a Teacher Incentive Allotment master-level designee. Ramos earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from the University of Texas at El Paso and a master’s degree in educational administration from Lamar University in Beaumont.

Bernal most recently served as assistant principal at Reyes Elementary, where she also completed her principal internship. She spent 10 years as a first- and third-grade teacher at multiple Canutillo ISD campuses. She is a Teacher Incentive Allotment exemplary designee and the 2015 recipient of the UTEP ABC Schwartz Novice Teacher Award. Bernal earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Texas at El Paso.
