Northwest Early College High School senior Jacob Lozano has been named the first recipient of Mayor of El Paso Renard Johnson’s Mayor’s Team of Excellence Award for the month of October 2025, recognizing his outstanding achievement in academics, citizenship and community service.

Mayor Johnson personally presented the award to Lozano, noting his impressive record of leadership and academic excellence.

“Jacob has done so much for the community and so much for his school,” said Mayor Johnson. “He is in Student Council, valedictorian, there is so much to say about Jacob … we’re glad to honor him with this award.”

As part of the ceremony, Lozano received a certificate and a special medal from Mayor Johnson.

The outstanding NWECHS student, who last year served as a Student Advisor for the Canutillo ISD Board of Trustees, expressed deep appreciation for the recognition and for the mayor’s initiative to highlight local student leaders.

“I feel grateful that we have a mayor who takes the time to go out across El Paso and recognize students who deserve to be recognized,” Lozano said. “I feel humbled and honored by this recognition.”

A top student at NWECHS, Lozano has consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence both in and out of the classroom. He hopes to attend Yale University and pursue a career as a civil rights or criminal justice attorney, where he plans to continue his passion for advocacy and service.

Adding to his growing list of accomplishments, Lozano also announced this week that he has been selected to serve on the new Student Advisory Council for the Texas State Board of Education (SBOE). In this prestigious statewide role, he will provide input and insight on behalf of 5.5 million public education students in Texas, helping shape decisions that impact schools across the state.

Great work, Jacob!
