Pride & Excellence
Canutillo Community,
In difficult times, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by uncertainty. Our country is facing many challenges that can weigh heavy on the hearts of families, communities and schools. Yet as I walk into our classrooms and campuses, I am reminded of the grit and perseverance that define Canutillo ISD. Despite the obstacles, our students, teachers and staff continue to shine in ways that show we are stronger than ever.
This week alone offered so many moments that demonstrate the pride and excellence that make Canutillo ISD a special place. Each example is a reminder that when we come together with a focus on learning, culture and community, our district flourishes.
One shining moment came when folklorico dancers from Canutillo Middle and Garcia Elementary wowed audiences at the Sembrando El Futuro Bilingual Education Conference hosted by Region 19. Hundreds of educators and community members from across the region watched with amazement as our students performed with skill and confidence. I received many messages from people who were impressed by the talent and dedication on display. The performance was not only beautiful but also a reflection of how our schools value culture and celebrate the traditions that enrich our community.
Speaking of bilingual education, we also had the honor of welcoming colleagues from Tornillo ISD to Reyes Elementary. They visited our dual-language classrooms to learn about the strategies our teachers are using to achieve outstanding results. Our dual-language program continues to inspire others and set the standard for what bilingual education can accomplish when students are encouraged to grow academically in two languages. The collaboration with Tornillo reminded us that our work has an impact beyond our district boundaries.
Damian Elementary also had its moment in the spotlight this week by hosting the first Texas Reads, Texas Leads Showcase. Educators from across the district and region gathered to see firsthand how our strategies in literacy for kindergarten through third grade are driving higher test scores and improving student outcomes. The showcase was a chance to highlight the dedication of our teachers and the progress our youngest learners are making. It was the first of what I know will be many opportunities to share the success stories of Canutillo ISD with others.
Our Canutillo Elementary community also came together for a historic occasion. On Wednesday, we broke ground on the Bond 2024 renovations at the campus. What made the event so memorable was the level of student participation. The Alderete Middle School band joined the Canutillo High School Drumline, Flight Dance Co. and the Blu Color Guard to create an atmosphere that was filled with energy and celebration. Seeing our students take part in such an important moment reminded me that the bond program is ultimately about them and their future.
Another encouraging sign of our district’s strength is that our attendance and enrollment remain steady and continue to meet projections. This is not just a statistic. It is evidence that our families are prioritizing education by making sure students are present and ready to learn each day. It also reflects the dedication of our bus drivers, cafeteria workers, maintenance staff and other auxiliary employees who keep our schools running smoothly. They are often the unsung heroes who make it possible for teaching and learning to take place.
Finally, I cannot forget to mention the excitement building around the Canutillo High School homecoming celebrations happening next week. Homecoming is always a time to honor our traditions, connect with alumni and give students memories they will cherish for years. It is a reminder that our schools are not only centers of learning but also the heart of community life.
In a world that can sometimes feel divided, it is important to pause and reflect on what brings us together. In Canutillo ISD, we are united by a shared desire to make our community an exemplary place to live and learn. As we look ahead, let us continue to focus on being the Canutillo ISD family — one that thrives on resilience, celebrates success and works every day for the future of our children.
