Transformative Teachers

Transformative Teachers

Canutillo Community,

October is National Principal Month, a time when school districts across the country pause to honor the leaders who set the tone for teaching and learning on every campus. At Canutillo ISD, we are proud to join in this celebration and shine a light on the incredible educators who serve as principals across our district.

When we think about the people who most influence the educational journey of a child, the classroom teacher often comes first to mind. Rightfully so, as teachers are the day-to-day guides who spark curiosity and build the foundation of knowledge. But after the teacher, there is no role more critical than that of the school principal. Principals establish the vision for a campus. They set expectations rooted in a careful understanding of each child’s strengths and challenges. They create an environment where teaching and learning can flourish.

The principal is the heartbeat of a school. From ensuring high-quality instruction in the classroom to making sure the hallways are safe and welcoming, principals make countless decisions each day that impact the lives of children. They are motivators, problem solvers, mentors and role models. Their leadership makes the difference between a campus that merely functions and one that thrives.

At Canutillo ISD, we are fortunate to count on 10 outstanding principals, each with unique talents and qualities, but all with the same unshakable commitment to our students. These leaders are a big reason why our district continues to be recognized as an instructional leader in Texas.

At Canutillo Elementary, Principal Andrea Esparza has demonstrated the ability to meet the needs of every type of learner, from the most gifted to those who face significant challenges. She approaches her work with precision and empathy, always seeking to find solutions that benefit both students and teachers. Her grace under pressure and her dedication to equity in education make her an inspiring example for all of us.

At Davenport Elementary, Principal Guadalupe Montañez has shown what transformation looks like. A Canutillo ISD-trained educator herself, she led her school from a D rating to an A rating in just one cycle. That remarkable turnaround is a testament not only to her skills as an instructional leader but also to her deep knowledge of our community and her belief in the potential of every child.

Childress Elementary Principal Maria Varela has made it her mission to maintain a tradition of excellence while building on it for the future. She has worked side by side with parents, teachers and students to create a school culture where learning is joyful and achievement is celebrated.

Damian Elementary is led by Principal Maggie Castillo, a proud alumna of Canutillo ISD. For her, leading Damian is personal. She understands firsthand how the work of her staff impacts families she grew up with. Her commitment to her community makes her leadership deeply meaningful and grounded in a sense of shared purpose.

García Elementary Principal Janeth Plaza may be new in her role, but she has already made a noticeable difference. With a solid foundation in instructional practices and a strong desire to prove herself, she is guiding her school toward new successes and giving both her teachers and students the confidence to reach their full potential.

Reyes Elementary is under the leadership of Dr. Jessica Melendez-Carrillo, whose innovative approaches to teaching and learning have transformed every school she has served. She is a true asset to Canutillo ISD, and her impact is visible in the constant outstanding outcomes and achievements of her students and staff.

Canutillo Middle School Principal Christopher Judge has built his leadership around expanding opportunity. With expertise in secondary education, he works tirelessly to ensure students, staff and families have access to resources that prepare them for success in high school and beyond.

At Alderete Middle, Principal Nidia Avila models a hands-on style of leadership. She spends much of her time in the hallways and classrooms, working alongside everyone from cafeteria staff to teachers. She knows that true leadership requires being present and available, and her visibility on campus makes a difference.

Canutillo High School Principal Candice Marrufo carries the weight of leading our largest campus with determination and vision. She balances the demands of rigorous instruction with the need to give students a well-rounded high school experience. Her work allows the school to develop the sense of pride that is creating a vibrant culture at CHS.

Northwest Early College High School Principal Frank Clark is a quiet but powerful leader. His results speak for themselves. Under his leadership, Northwest has become one of the most decorated schools in Texas, earning accolades that reflect his focus on equipping both students and teachers with the tools they need to succeed at the highest level.

I also want to recognize Salvador Garcia, who coordinates our Lone Star Academy and Opportunity Academy – Canutillo’s alternative education programs. While his title may not be principal, his responsibilities mirror that of one. He manages teachers, advocates for students and creates pathways for success, even for those who may have struggled in traditional settings. His work ensures that every student has a chance to thrive.

I could not be prouder of the principals and leaders we have in Canutillo ISD. They embody the values of service, commitment and excellence that make our district one of the best in Texas.

This October, I encourage everyone in our community to take a moment to thank a principal. Whether it is a note, a handshake or simply a kind word, let them know the difference they make. Happy Principal Appreciation Month to our 10 outstanding principals and to Salvador Garcia. You are transforming lives every day.

Finally, I also want to take a moment to recognize another group of Canutillo employees who make a tremendous impact on our students’ education. Our CISD custodians work tirelessly to keep our facilities clean and safe. In many ways, they are the key to ensuring our students learn in an environment that supports success.

This week, we celebrated Custodial Worker Appreciation Day. Thank you, Canutillo custodians, for your invaluable contributions to our mission of educating children.

¡Viva Canutillo!
