Canutillo High School student only El Pasoan invited to attend 2024 Dell Medical School Health Sciences Summer Camp
Summertime is not break time for incoming Canutillo High School junior Valentina Carrillo.

The busy student recently was the only El Pasoan to be invited to attend the 2024 Dell Medical School Health Sciences Summer Camp – an opportunity only extended to 50 students in the state.

The camp was held in June at the University of Texas at Austin and it provided students with an opportunity to learn more about the health sciences. The camp is designed to inspire, prepare and expose students to professions within the healthcare field, including those underrepresented in medicine.

Valentina, who plans to pursue a career in health sciences, said she was happy to represent Canutillo and El Paso at the camp.

“I am so grateful for this incredible opportunity,” she said. “I learned so much from the healthcare field experts who gave presentations and contributed to my learning. It really opened my eyes to the world of healthcare and the multiple ways I can pursue my passion of bettering the lives of others.”

During the weeklong program, Valentina and other participants learned clinical skills such as administering IVs, performing intubations, drawing blood and taking vital signs using the same spaces as pre-med, medical and health profession students at UT-Austin’s Dell Medical School.

After participation in the summer camps, high school students are invited to remain engaged with Dell Med throughout the school year in the Health Sciences Yearlong Academy.
