Eagles, Griffins girls flag football coming to Canutillo ISD
All-girl teams from Canutillo and Northwest Early College high schools will join other squads from throughout El Paso to participate in the first-ever Region 19 Female Flag Football Pilot Championship this spring.
The NFL-sanctioned championship is organized by the El Paso Sports Commission and features mentorship and sponsorship by both the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans. The league begins on April 29 and the championship tournament is set for May 19-22.
For Canutillo ISD Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Scott Brooks, the flag football tournament is an opportunity to further expand the girls flag football, which organizers called one of the fastest growing sports in the country.
“We have had a history of amazing female football players in our District and we know that more and more girls are interested in the sport,” Brooks said. “This tournament is going to give us a chance to engage with more players who want to participate and represent their campus.”
During an event earlier this week, coaches from Canutillo High and Northwest Early College were drafted into mentorship partnerships with NFL teams, coaches and players. The draft was administered by NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations, Troy Vicent and former NFL player Bobby Taylor.
The teams will play a total of 6 games before the tournament. CISD teams will train and receive coaching and equipment before they play against teams from throughout the county.
Northwest Early College coach Victor Corral said the league will provide his students with a much-desired ability to participate in competitive sports. As an early college, Northwest does not participate in UIL sports.
"We are proud of the academic success we have with our students, but now we will be able to show that sports and fitness is also important here at Northwest," he said. "Several girls have already expressed an interest in representing their school and I am certain they will show that amazing Griffin prowess."
