One Act Play
The CHS thespians have shown they have the goods to make it far into the Class 5A University Interscholastic League One-Act Play State Competition and earlier this week the troupe outperformed other theater programs in the area to qualify for the Regional Competition later this month in Lubbock.
The Regional competition is the last hurdle between the Canutillo drama group and the coveted state tournament.
“What this group of students has done is nothing short of amazing,” said theater teacher and Canutillo Stage Players sponsor Jesse Ramirez. “It’s been 20 years since Canutillo has made it this far in the One-Act Play state contest and we are one of few theater programs ever to reach this level. This is great for Canutillo and great for El Paso.”
Canutillo this year staged a production of “Amadeus” by Peter Shaffer, a fictionalized account of the lives of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri.
During the Area round of the contest, Canutillo placed among the best in West Texas. CHS will be one of only six schools competing at Regionals for two available spots in State. On top of the regional qualification, the Eagles earned several other accolades at Area.
Actors Michael Smith and Angel Pacheco were named to the All-Star Cast, and Canutillo High School earned the Best Technical Crew Award.
