Two CISD students selected to serve in congresswoman’s youth council
Two students from the Canutillo Independent School District have been selected to serve on U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar’s 2025–26 Congressional Youth Advisory Council.
Alejandro López, a junior at Canutillo High School, and Jacob Lozano, a senior at Northwest Early College High School, were among a select group of high school students from across Texas’ 16th Congressional District chosen for the prestigious program.
The Congressional Youth Advisory Council (CYAC) offers high school students in grades 10 through 12 an opportunity to engage in the democratic process and provide input on issues that affect young people in the region. Students on the council meet throughout the academic year to discuss public policy, develop leadership skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the legislative process.
“We are incredibly proud of Alejandro and Jacob for representing Canutillo ISD at the national level,” Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz said. “Their selection is a testament to the leadership potential that exists within our schools and the strong academic foundation we provide to help students thrive beyond the classroom.”
López and Lozano will participate in a series of meetings with Congresswoman Escobar and her staff during the 2025–26 school year. The program includes discussions on current legislation, research projects and civic engagement activities designed to foster a lifelong commitment to public service.
Congresswoman Escobar established the CYAC to encourage young people to be informed and active participants in democracy. According to her office, the program also helps shape legislative priorities by incorporating youth perspectives into the policymaking process.
