Infectious Disease Management

Canutillo ISD will put in place a core set of infectious disease prevention and management strategies as part of normal operations:

  1. Staying up-to-date on vaccinations
  2. Staying home when sick
  3. Hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette
  4. Cleaning
  5. Ventilation
  6. Notifications

1. Staying Up-To-Date On Vaccinations

Staying current on routine vaccinations is essential to prevent illness from many different infections in staff and students.

2. Staying Home When Sick

Staff and students who have symptoms of respiratory or gastrointestinal infections, such as cough, fever, sore throat, vomiting, or diarrhea, should stay home in order to decrease the likelihood of transmission of illness to others.

3. Hand Hygiene And Respiratory Etiquette

School campuses will reinforce hand washing, especially during key times in the day, such as before and after eating, after using the restroom, and after recess. Schools will provide adequate handwashing supplies or hand sanitizer when washing hands is not possible. The covering of coughs and sneezes to help keep individuals from getting and spreading infectious diseases will also be strongly encouraged.

4. Cleaning

Surfaces that staff and students come in contact with in the school should be cleaned at least once a day to reduce the risk of germs spreading by touching those surfaces. High-touch surfaces may need to be cleaned more often and any visibly dirty surface should be cleaned regardless of the time it was last cleaned.

5. Ventilation

Canutillo ISD will continue to maintain the ventilation systems in their buildings in order to optimize indoor air quality and reduce the risk of germs and contaminants spreading through the air.

6. Notifications

Cases of infectious diseases, such as hand-foot-and-mouth disease, the flu, or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), in addition to others, will be tracked and a notice will be sent to parents/guardians. Depending on the number of active cases, notices will be sent by classroom, grade level or school campus.
