Two Canutillo Independent School District speech language pathologists are spending part of their summer helping students who use Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC) devices enjoy fun activities at a local summer camp.
Vanessa Damian and Jo Jean Butler are working with students who use the AAC devices — computers or tablets used by children with speech or language impediments — at Camp Everyone Talk happening at Mission Valley Elementary School in El Paso’s Lower Valley.
Camp Everyone Talk is a fun and free four-day experience for AAC device users in the area.
Organizers said the camp gives AAC device users an opportunity to experience a summer camp with peers who have the same interests and challenges.
Damian and Butler assist students with their communication devices and their expertise give students a voice during camp activities, including arts and crafts, adaptive motor activities and a field trip to a local bowling alley.
