This is the image for the news article titled Message from Board President Patsy Mendoza - Aug. 18Dear Canutillo Familia,

This past weekend the Canutillo Independent School District once again showed the rest of El Paso what we are made up of. For the third year in a row, a CISD educator was named Region 19 Secondary Teacher of the Year. Canutillo High School’s Bruce Hoang will represent far west Texas at the Texas State Teacher of the Year Contest.

I was thrilled to hear the news that once again the high quality of instruction happening in Canutillo is being recognized throughout the region. Mr. Hoang has had a tremendous impact in the lives of so many students at CHS and the response to his win has been heartwarming. So many students and former students reached out to the District to share their stories of Mr. Hoang and to say how happy they were that he won.

His story is inspiring, too. A native of Vietnam, Mr. Hoang came to America to seek a better life. Through education (he is a Stanford graduate) he was able to achieve the American Dream and transform the lives of his family. He is now sharing his knowledge and passion with the students at CHS, and for that we are grateful.

I also want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Ms. Myla Dayrit who represented Canutillo well at the Region 19 Elementary Teacher of the Year contest.

Good luck at state, Mr. Hoang! Bring home the prize!

On a personal note, I would like to extend my most heartfelt condolences to Trustee Armando Rodríguez who lost his mother this week. Ms. Leticia was the matriarch of the family and an amazing Canutillo High School alumna from the Class of 1970. Her passing leaves a huge void in our community and her legacy lives on in the work that her children are doing to improve the lives of our students.

May she rest in peace.

¡Un fuerte abrazo!

Patricia Mendoza
President
