During the 2nd annual Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Bowl of the third and final day of the GRIT professional development conference, teachers and staff honed their skills to not only meet students’ academic needs but also best serve their social and emotional well-being.

Keynote speaker, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Kelly Cook provided participants an in-depth look at how trauma impacts behavior, learning, the developing brain and the physical, emotional, and relational health of students. They learned practical tools and avenues for helping the District create an environment that fosters better emotional, relational and education growth.

“It is more important than ever to focus on the social and emotional needs of all our students and create safe and healthy learning environments,” said the Executive Director of Student Support Services Dr. Monica Reyes. “Our goal is to arm our educators and staff with the skills and knowledge to fulfill the needs of the whole child.”

The GRIT professional development conference was a success this year. Teachers and staff are looking forward to putting all their new knowledge and skills into practice when they welcome students back to their classrooms on Monday, Aug. 1.
