¡Sí, se puede! was the motto for 38 dual-language elementary students throughout the Best Small District in Texas after each earned Spanish high-school credit even before they entered middle school.
The group of CISD students were able to accomplish this feat through their participation in Canutillo ISD’s innovative dual-language curriculum and a strong showing on state tests and language proficiency assessments.
Each student earned Meets or Masters in STAAR Reading and Math tests, passed the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) - an assessment program for students in Texas public schools who are learning the English language - as well as the Spanish language proficiency test Leading the Way in Language Assessment (LAS) that measures speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
“The opportunity for these students to earn Spanish high school credit after just completing their elementary education is extraordinary and we are very proud of them for all the work they put in to excel academically in both English and Spanish,” said Director of Academic Language Services Noni Silva. “Research has continually shown the connection between overall stronger academic performance and cognitive thinking in students exposed to dual language at an early age. These students already have a leg up even before they start their secondary education.”
