The Canutillo Independent School District’s Northwest Early College High School (NWECHS) student council students had a busy school year working towards uplifting their campus and community. Their diligent efforts were capped with the honor of being recognized by the Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC) as an outstanding student council in the areas of drugs, alcohol, safety, and health (DASH); pride and patriotism; energy and environment; and community service.
TASC has 1,165 member schools. Of those, NWECHS is one of only 209 student councils statewide to receive this highly-esteemed honor that highlights their outstanding achievement in leadership, service, and activities that serve to improve the school and community.
“This year has been a huge learning curve as a first-year student council advisor. However, without the help from teachers, the staff, and the support of our principal, Mrs. Jesica Arellano, none of this would be possible,” said Miguel A. Martinez, advisor of NWECHS student council. “I want to give all the credit for the ideas, the planning, the organization, and the continual motivation, to my student council officers. They’re the true spirit of all the good things happening at our campus.”
Student council members develop proven skills in team building, problem-solving, project planning, and decision making. Through their co-curricular activities, members serve their communities while strengthening their academic and civic skills.
Paris Gastelum, president of NWECHS student council, echoed the sentiments of treasurer Sabastian Esparza upon learning of this recognition by saying, “We will use this honor as momentum to only get better.”
TASC is a non-profit serving high school and middle-level student councils in Texas. Sponsored by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals, its purposes are to develop leadership abilities in students, promote democracy as a way of life, and uphold high standards for local councils. TASC members work every day to make schools a place where students and staff want to be and to leave our world better than they found it. With almost 1200 member schools, it is the largest state student council organization in the United States.
